"Significantly, Anglo values have become something of a mesure of normalness
[ar even truth) in the global media system. This is due, in no small mesure, to
the growing centrality of the US media [such as CNNJ within the New World
Drder. Consequently, Anglo journalists assume these values to be universally
valid and uncontested truths, partly because the New World Drder is a de facto
Anglo hegemony. Measuring ar her cultures against Anglo values is thus taken
far granted. So, far example, the American trajectory of socio-economic deve­
lopment is sean as a valid model far all to emulate and the Anglo-American
modelo far organizing the state (as a unified majoritarian democracy) becomes
a self-evidente truth. When Americans carne to believe in the melting pot (i.e.
Cultural integration and assimilation) that became the meassurement criteria
far ali. When multiculturalism replaced the melting pot, the journalistic measu­
rement criteria also shifted. Those not adhering to Anglo-American models of
societal organization become despicable and/or incomprehensible , North
Korea , lran, Afghanistan and Libya have become such incomprehensible socie­
ties, as have all muslim fundamentalism has become a majar bao word in the
Anglo global media). Generally, black African conflicts -far example, in Somalía,
Sierra Leone, Rwanda, and Zaire/Congo- have also been presented as incom­
prehensible, although the opaqueness of theses conflicts is often indirectly
explained away by alloding to Western common knowledge of the interently des­
picable nature of darkest Africa. Similarly, ethnic wars in the farmer Yugoslavia
were seen as despicable by the Anglo global media, while the Balkan peoples
become incomprehensible far failing to behave in a civilized [anglo) way [ . . .] lf
the global media are to be believed, Anglos figths wars, engage in conflict and
impose their will on others because they have good reasons to do so, where­
as other people do so because they are routinaly normalized while non-Anglo
hegemonies are routinaly measured against Anglo norms and/or in terms of
their use fluness to Anglo hegemonies" (Louw, 2001 : 1 94 y 1 95).
Como bien advierte De Gournay, en la actual etapa de transición histórica
podemos ver la oposición de un espacio salvaje contra el espacio codificado por
el capital , que hace visible la potencia de la razón nómada contra las jerarquí­
as sedentarias de la diferenciación; más aún, en el actual proceso de rearticu­
lación y cambio social queda expuesta la racionalidad dominante en Occidente,
cuya lógica tecnocientífica y representación instrumental del conocimiento está
siendo seriamente impugnada como sistema de dominación.
La comunicación global posmoderna, la producción biopolítica transversal y
las identidades culturales hibridadas, las migraciones y transformaciones societa­
rias de la comunicación nómada apuntan la necesidad de pensar la diferencia a
partir de categorías superadoras de la vieja concepción nacional del mundo y de
la lógica informacional que presidió a lo largo del pasado siglo el pensamiento
comunicológico. La cultura nómada nos propone la oportunidad de un tiempo y
